The New Canon EOS 500D

Canon has unveiled a new upper entry level camera, the Canon EOS 500D also known as the Canon Digital Rebel T1i, replacing the older Canon 450D model. It has a whooping 15.1 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. Just like the Canon 5D mark 2  it is capable of shooting videos with 1080p HD recording at 20fps. The display preview offers a 920,000 dot resolution with a large 3.0 inch LCD. This is great for viewing details on the photo, especially for sharpness.

The Canon EOS 500D is now integrated with a Digic 4 processor offering better noise reduction and a higher ISO sensitivity reaching up to 12,800. The low-pass filter vibration is still a very useful feature. It helps reduce those pesky sensor dust.

Introductory price for body only is around $799 and $899 with a Canon EF 18-55 IS kit lens.

A New Canon Speedlite

Canon also introduced the Speedlite 270EX, features a two-position manual zoom head with 28mm and 50mm lens coverage, a metal mounting foot and quick-lock mechanism, bounce capability and support for both E-TTL II and manually-controlled flash output. I personally like bouncing the flash on a white ceiling rather than blasting the light straight to the subject. With the 270EX’s tilt feature, harsh shadows can be reduced.

Canon Speedlite 270EX

Although the Canon Speedlite 270 EX lacks a test fire button, like the 220EX, the 270EX is powered by two AA batteries. The Canon Speedlite 270EX is compatible with all Canon EOS cameras, PowerShot G-series cameras and some SX-series cameras.  Introductory price will be around $230 and will be available in the market by May of this year.

tsk..tsk…tsk….. naluma na agad 450D ko… mabenta nga at makabili ng 500D

  2. Leonard Pe says:

@kyawkyaw – yeah.. it will be here in the Philippines anytime now.. hmm ISO 12800! Now beat that.. let’s just see how it will handle noise at that high ISO setting. I hope somebody will lend me one so I can make a hands-on review of this new toy ;)

  3. Nash says:

I watched the CNEt review earlier, one hell of a nice camera I must say :)

Nash’s post: EP 11: And The Winner Is….

  4. Emily says:

    Grabe, replace agad ang 450d?
    Wag naman. :p

  5. Leonard Pe says:

@Nash – for an entry level camera, it can now compete with the 10D series bodies in terms of ISO and image quality I bet

@Emily – yeah, ganon naman talaga ang Canon, every year they introduce a newer model.

  6. Emily says:

Parang Nokia pala ang Canon. XD
Maybe, iba ang target nito na market, basing on the controls and stuff.

  7. Leonard Pe says:

@Emily – Canon xxxD series (300D, 350D..500D) are upper entry level camera bodies targetting consumers on a budget. Though the 1000D is the cheapest in the Canon DSLR line.

The xD series (10D, 20D.. 50D) targets a more serious consumer.

  8. Meo says:

Grabe naman….nagbabalak pa nga lang ako ng 450D eh. Tapos itu na agad ang 500D. Hehe. Eh kamusta naman kaya ang presyo nito?

introductory price nyan, the usual 45K+ dito.. but on the other hand it’s a good thing rin, i’m sure magbaba ang price ng 450D.. go for the 450D, it’s a very capable camera naman, 10 megapixels is plenty for a very large print.

  10. jesusmaryjoseph (susmaryosep) says:

well there are rumors of the 550D around and would be enhanced particularly sa hd capture nito… so guys… is it really worth it for video HD? the audio is just mono… so I guess thats what the future 550d,600d, etc… will do…upgrade miniscule imperfections… if i wanted to shoot hd why not buy RED system cameras…

you know it never ends…. they are now trying to make photographers into videographers……hmm can we really take that leap? is taking a snap shot really not enough anymore for the average amateur photographer?

but anyway great news for future upgraders to the canon 500d!

  11. Leonard Pe says:

@jesusmaryjoseph (susmaryosep) – that’s how camera manufacturers market their products.. it works for them. Nevertheless, we the consumers, always have the last say on what to and what not to buy.

  12. Mark R. says:

Kelan kaya magkakaroon d2 sa pinas?
    any balita?

  13. Leonard Pe says:

@Mark R. – it is expected to be in the market by next month or by june depending on the stock availability. Let’s wait for the 450D price drop, that signals the availability here in pinas.

  14. boydtibone says:

wow canon 500D. do you guys have any idea between the comparison of the canon 500D with the nikon D90? for me it’s the closest competitor. and this year, i plan to invest on the dslr preferrably nikon D90, but because of the killer price of the D90, it would take me another year. hehe! and now i think i would pursue canon 500D.

  15. Leonard Pe says:

@boydtibone – let’s wait for the 500D to hit the market and see its capability in real world use. Nikon D90 on the other hand is a very good camera, high iso images are so clean and also good for infrared photography.
